Biological Information
Background Information:
NEK9 (NIMA-related kinase 9) is a serine/threonine protein kinase that belongs to the NEK (never in mitosis gene A-related kinase) family of kinases. It is involved in a variety of cellular processes, including regulation of the cell cycle, mitosis, and the DNA damage response. NEK9 is expressed in a wide range of tissues and cell types, and is regulated by various post-translational modifications, including phosphorylation and ubiquitination. Research has suggested that NEK9 plays a role in several diseases, including cancer and ciliopathies. In cancer, NEK9 has been shown to promote cell proliferation and survival, and inhibition of NEK9 has been suggested as a potential cancer therapy. In ciliopathies, NEK9 has been implicated in the regulation of cilia length and number, and mutations in NEK9 have been associated with ciliopathy-related disorders such as Joubert syndrome.
