Biological Information

Background Information:

MDA5 is part of the RIG-I-like receptor (RLR) family, which also includes RIG-I and DHX58 (LGP2). It is an innate immune receptor capable of detecting viral nucleic acids and plays a major role in sensing viral infections and activating a cascade of antiviral responses including the induction of type I interferons and pro-inflammatory cytokines. In addition to this role, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of MDA5 have been implicated in a number of inflammatory conditions including type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, vitiligo, multiple sclerosis and lupus. Dysregulation/mutation of MDA5, DHX58 (LGP2) and RIG-I has been implicated in abnormal inflammatory responses to viral infections as well as autoimmune diseases.
