Innate immunity plays a vital role in detecting cytoplasmic nucleic acids resulting from viral infection or the presence of tumor cells. Cytosolic DNA is sensed by the cyclic-GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway, and in the case of tumors, activation of this pathway has potential to both positively and negatively modulate cancer development.
