α-Ketoglutaric acid is a naturally occurring ketone derivative of glutaric acid and intermediate of the Krebs cycle. It serves as a nitrogen transporter, antioxidant, anabolic, wound healer, and may have anti-aging properties. α-Ketoglutaric acid is used to treat kidney disease, GI disorders, bacterial infections, liver problems, cataracts, and yeast infections. It is commonly sold as a supplement to help combat ammonia toxicity.
