Biological Information

Background Information:

Death-associated protein kinase (DAPK) is a calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase that phosphorylates serine/threonine residues on proteins. DAPK modulates cell death induced by IFN-g, TNF-a, Fas, and detachment from the extracellular matrix. DAPK has been also implicated in TGF-induced apoptosis in several cultured cell lines in which Smad proteins mediate transcriptional activation of DAPK. A member of DAP kinase family, DAPK2 is a 42 KDa calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine/threonine kinase localized in the cytoplasm. Reports suggest DAPK2 along with DAPK1 induces membrane blebbing and formation of autophagic vesicles and plays a vital role in TGF-induced caspase-dependent Type-I and IFNγ-induced caspase-independent autophagic type II cell death signaling. Inhibition of DAPK2 may facilitate tumor progression. GenBank NM_014326
