The α6 subtype of nicotinic receptors has been less studied due in part to the inability to express alpha 6 as the sole alpha subunit. In addition, the α6 subunit may be co-expressed with other alpha subunits, such as the hnAChR α4 subunit. The α4α6β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are highly expressed in mesostriatal and nigrostriatal dopaminergic systems. These receptors could be potential targets for treatment of Parkinson’s disease and addictive behaviors.
