Biological Information

Background Information:

beta-catenin is a multifunctional cytoplasmic and nuclear protein that plays dual roles in cell–cell adhesion and gene transcription regulation. It is a central component of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway, which governs embryonic development, stem cell maintenance, and tissue homeostasis. In the absence of Wnt signaling, beta-catenin is continually targeted for degradation. Upon Wnt pathway activation, this degradation is inhibited, allowing beta-catenin to accumulate in the nucleus where it associates with TCF/LEF transcription factors to activate expression of Wnt target genes. Aberrant stabilization or mutation of beta-catenin is a hallmark of several cancers, including colorectal, hepatocellular, ovarian, and endometrial carcinoma.
