Job Title: Scientist, Profiling and Cell Services

Summary
The successful candidate for the Scientist position will join the Profiling and Screening team to provide support for our high value commercial research services using DiscoverX PathHunter platform and other proprietary technologies. You will be utilizing skills in cell biology, mammalian cell culture, automation and assay development to optimize and validate assays for compound testing and screening.

Essential Functions

  • Optimization of assays to obtain robust performance in screening applications.
  • Validation of cell based assays for profiling and screening projects.
  • Generation of reference data for qualification of assays.
  • Routine testing of customer compounds.
  • Instrument protocol optimization and validation.
  • Daily laboratory notebook entry.
  • Daily database documentation entry.
  • Weekly progress report generation.
  • Monthly Inventory report generation.
  • Participation in and presentation at group laboratory meetings.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.

Required Education/Experience/Competencies
  • Bachelors in cell biology or biochemistry plus 3 - 5 years relevant experience.
  • Proven expertise with cell based signaling assays (i.e. GPCR cAMP and Ca2+ second messenger assays).
  • Must be detailed orientated and consistent in experimental approach.
  • Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be team-oriented and accustomed to working with other scientists.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be comfortable and experienced working in a commercially focused lab environment.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Experience with lab automation strongly desired (liquid handlers / plate readers, robotics).
  • Experience with database-based analysis software preferred (Activity Base / Spotfire).

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
Laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard laboratory equipment. This position operates in a BSL1/2 laboratory setting. There is potential for exposure to human tissues and fluids.

Job Title: Principal Scientist

Classification:  Exempt
Location:  Fremont, CA

Summary
The successful candidate for the Principal Scientist position will become an integral member of the PathHunter assay development team, with responsibility for designing and generating novel cellular assays for important therapeutic targets, including iOnc.

Essential Functions

  • Research, design and validate novel cell-based assays for multiple DiscoverX technology platforms, with an emphasis on immuno-oncology targets.
  • Perform critical interpretation of data, formulate alternate approaches to generate assays for challenging targets.
  • Prepare and present experimental data at group laboratory meetings, to management team and at external scientific meetings.
  • Prepare data and content for posters, manuscripts, white papers, user manuals, customer reports, or other relevant company materials.
  • Work diligently to meet product development goals set by management team.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.

Required Education/Experience/Competencies
  • Ph.D. in cell biology, immunology, cancer immunology or related discipline, with a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral/industrial experience.
  • Candidate is expected to be scientifically independent, a creative thinker, and able to rapidly identify solutions to complex problems.
  • Previous experience in cell-based assay development, particularly in generating screen-enabling models of disease, strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working with primary immune cells and diverse cancer-derived cell lines required.
  • Hands-on experience with flow cytometry methods and analysis required.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills are essential.  
  • Must be team-oriented with a demonstrated track record working in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Experience with immune-relevant cell models and analyses, such as ADCC, ADCP, T cell activation preferred.

Job Title: Scientist III - Mammalian Cell Culture

Location:  San Diego, CA

Summary
DiscoverX seeks a Scientist III - Mammalian Cell Culture to work in R&D, providing support for assay development and screening operations. Responsibilities will include maintaining up to 20 different mammalian cell lines, plating 384-well cell plates for screening operation using automation, and assisting in developing novel cell based assays. Qualified candidates should have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology and at least 5 years of relevant experience. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in teams are essential. Experience working in a cell culture lab maintaining mammalian cell lines is required.

Essential Functions

  • Provide cell plates for assay development and screening in 384-well format.
  • Maintaining, expanding, and banking cell lines.
  • Optimize growth parameters of cell lines and troubleshoot.
  • Maintain master cell bank and inventory for cell culture lab, including electronic records.
  • Quality check lab equipment and perform mycoplasma tests.
  • Supervise junior team members.
  • Contribute new ideas to improve cost and efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience/Competencies
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Candidate must have significant hands-on experience maintaining, expanding, and banking cell lines.
  • Candidates should have a track record of problem solving, strong organization, data management and communication skills, and the ability to collaborate between multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel/PowerPoint/Word.
  • Experience using electronic databases.
  • Ability to rapidly master new techniques.
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays may be required.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Applicants with experience in and a proven track record with cell-based assays using the FLIPR instrument will be favorably considered.
